After a wonderful family dinner tonight, I met Douglas Hall — a very happy man.
Douglas is a Kuwaiti vet who lost his leg to an IED.
Douglas is homeless is New York City.
Douglas got robbed last night and lost his brand new phone and the $130 in cash he had on him. But he told me: “it’s my fault as I fell asleep on the street…I should have been more careful”
But Douglas still has his guitar, and he revels in how he is able to make little tourist kids laugh…he truly seemed happy.
Treat homeless vets like humans. Stop by, get to know their story, shake their hand, as you would a friend. See if you can help them. Talk to them like peers…the rewards and lessons learned are amazing.
Being a marine, his parting words were of course Semper Fi (a Latin phrase that means “always faithful” or “always loyal”).
Thank you Douglas for the life lesson. I will email you!
